Returning home from backpacking in Asia upon hearing of the death of her mother, Emmie (Alyssa Lobit) is forced to face her past and her sister, Eve (Catherine Kresge) in The Things We Carry. With a screenplay by Alyssa Lobit and produced by her sister Athena Lobit, the honest, often uncomfortable relationship Emmie and Eve have feels raw and real.

Using flashbacks to advance the narrative, the sisters handle their mother, Sunny (Alexis Rhee), and her drug addiction very differently. This eventually creates a rift that not only pushes the girls apart, but threatens to ruin their relationship.

The girls set off to find a package their mother has left for them, an inheritance of sorts, and meet many of their mother's cronies -- who also suffer from drug abuse. This quest unites the sisters, yet forces them to deal with their differences of how they handled their mother.

Well written and acted, The Things We Carry is a sweet yet gritty movie that isn't afraid to show the truth of a family fractured and how two sisters work to mend their heartbreak.

(The Things We Carry screens today, 5 p.m., at Los Angeles' National Center for the Preservation of Democracy located at 111 N. Central Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012. For more information: http://www.marginfilms.com/idff/2010/)
